What We Know So Far about the Upcoming Chris Pine D&D Film

The globally famous tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons is moving to the big screen once again. The first time fans got a taste of the game being given the Hollywood treatment was in 2000 and, unfortunately, it left a lot to be desired and racked up a measly 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hopefully this second time’s the charm, and it’s looking like the Dungeons and Dragons movie executives are hoping for that as well, as they’ve equipped this highly anticipated film with a star-studded cast.

Casting Details

Wonder Woman actor Chris Pine has been signed to be in the movie, along with Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu’s Justice Smith, and Fast and the Furious franchise’ Michelle Rodriguez. It was later revealed as well that actors Hugh Grant and Sophia Lillis were set to star in the movie as well.

With the movie being so highly anticipated, any details have been kept mum. There hasn’t been any confirmation of what roles any of these actors will be playing, with the exception of Page, who has been cast to be a lead role. Hugh Grant, on the other hand, has been talked about playing the movie’s main antagonist.

Given these casting details, fans have begun to speculate the direction that the Dungeons and Dragons movie is taking with regards to storytelling. The movie could be a full-on fantasy film or it could be a movie about the game without actually being set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons. Either way, all of it remains to be speculation as the entire atmosphere around the movie’s production has been extremely secretive.

Main Production Details

The production of this upcoming Paramount movie has been a long time coming, to say the least. There was an initial legal battle over who would get to have Dungeons and Dragons’ filming rights, which only ended in 2015 with a settlement.

Originally, Warner Bros. was set to make the movie, with Ansel Elgort being in talks to star in it. Eventually, however, the rights went to Paramount, who had struck a production and distribution deal with Hasbro, Wizards of that Coast’s parent company and, essentially, the company that owns the rights to Dungeons and Dragons.

The original draft for the movie’s script was written by Michael Gilio. Now, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have both been hired for the roles of writer and director, with their own script based on Gilio’s original one. Goldstein and Daley are known for having worked together on the script for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Paramount and eOne, Hasbro’s entertainment arm, have agreed to jointly produce and finance the movie, with eOne distributing in the UK and Canada, leaving Paramount to handle distribution to the rest of the world. Through a deal with eOne, Jeremy Latcham is set to produce along with Hasbro’s own Brian Goldner.

Filming and Release Date

The release date for this Dungeons and Dragons movie has been up in the air since the beginning of the movie’s announcement. To date, it has had a total of two release date delays due to complications with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Originally, the film was set to release on November 19, 2021 but was later pushed back to May 27, 2022. The second delay has pushed the movie to have a 2023 release, with no specific date this time.

However, with this being said, director Johnathan Goldstein already announced on May 1, 2021 via Twitter that filming had already begun. The picture accompanying his tweet showed the filming date to be April 29, 2021.

While not a lot of details about the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons movie has been revealed, it’s safe to say that it’s definitely a movie that fans all over the world can expect to see in the future.

Dungeons and Dragons is one of the most popular tabletop roleplaying games in the world, with well over 40 million fans interacting with the game since its release in 1974.
