Warhammer 40k Lore, Part 1: The God-Emperor of Mankind

Warhammer 40k has forever changed the face of wargaming and tabletop gaming in general. Over the course of 34 years, the game has built up an immense and loyal following. Games Workshop, the proverbial progenitors of this amazing hobby, has continued to add more and more to the game. Now, there are countless ways to build an army, dozens upon dozens of books published about the lore, and multitudes upon multitudes of players who make sure to keep themselves updated about every new release.

One aspect without which the game would not be the same is its rich and expansive lore. Some players are attracted by the aspect of painting and creating their own armies, others by the challenging mechanics and strategies, and many by the meticulously crafted lore.

As homage to the game, this article will start at the beginning: the God-Emperor of Mankind. The canon may or may have not changed since this article was written, and there may be spoilers in this article that you want to avoid.

Magic: The Gathering Lore, Part 2 – Freyalise’s Sacrifice

Continuing on with our series on Magic: the Gathering lore, we’re going to get into some specifics of Planeswalker lore. In this article, we will focus solely on the life of Planeswalker Freyalise—one of the Planeswalkers involved in the Great Mending.

Freyalise was a half-elven Planeswalker centered in green mana and born in Terisiare, Dominaria. She was known for wearing an eye patch, having short brown hair, and for her preference of floating just a little above the ground rather than standing on it.

One of the greatest and most interesting aspects of Magic: The Gathering is the lore. The game’s creator, Richard Garfield, built such a complex world that any gamer, from seasoned player to beginner, can get lost in its details forever. While many play for the amazing gameplay, knowing the lore can only help with the overall MtG experience.

Whether you’re just starting to learn how the game works or in need of a refresher, this series of articles about MtG Lore is going to be perfect for knowing the basics. That said, what better way to kick off these articles than to start with the players of Magic: The Gathering themselves? Essentially, players of the game become part of the lore as Planeswalkers themselves.
